![]() ![]() The US didn’t enter the war until nearly two years after the sinking of the RMS Lusitania the sinking did cause Germany to halt using submarine torpedoes in the war, and it garnered huge support from American citizens to fight alongside the British. WWI: Began in July 1914 with England and Germany on opposite sides. One historical figure mentioned in the novel who died in the sinking was Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt. Of those, 4 later died from their injuries. RMS Lusitania: Had 1,959 passengers onboard when it set sail and only 761 survived the sinking. ![]() References to real places: In the opening chapter when Sarah is on her way to the book club meeting, she mentions Cleopatra’s Needle, which is in Central Park, and Daniel’s Restaurant, which is a modern restaurant located on the Upper East Side. ![]()
